Marvel and DC Are Battling For Fighting Game Superiority

Fighting games are getting big again and this is welcome news for old-school gamers. There was a time when it looked like classic fighters were on their way out, but thanks to competitions like the annual EVO tournament and new entries in the Street Fighter and Tekken series they’re more popular than they’ve been in years. And it isn’t just established franchises that are responsible for the resurgence of fighting games. New properties and fresh takes on more niche series have exploded onto the scene. One major reason for the success of these new titles is the popularity of superheroes.

27483_30181990746_f9c8a437ce_b[51751]DC’s Injustice 2 has been a huge hit and has received rave reviews to boot. The game is directed by Ed Boon, one of the main minds behind the Mortal Kombat series. With this level of fighting game pedigree behind the project, it’s no wonder it’s been so successful. Its fast-paced, brutal fighting and gorgeous graphics helped Injustice 2 establish itself as a must-play title for fighting fans and is even better than the original. It also features one of most eye-popping collections of DC legends you’ll ever see with more than 25 combatants. The game has also started to extend its reach beyond the DC Universe, because the latest DLC includes Sub-Zero, the iconic Mortal Kombat warrior. It’s a move that seems reminiscent of the esteemed Marvel vs. Capcom series, and it definitely looks like DC is trying to edge in on Marvel’s crossover turf. The House of Ideas isn’t taking this lying down, though.

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is set to be released later this year and it’s looking like it will be the biggest and most ambitious one yet. Infinite is going to have the most impressive roster of characters to date, and it keeps getting bigger by the day. There are plenty of new characters to the series including Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. There are more to be announced, and that’s only on the Marvel side. The previous entry in the franchise had nearly 50 characters and it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect even more to make the list for Infinite.

The popularity of these two games has pitted Marvel and DC against each other once again, though this time it’s taking place on consoles. But this actually isn’t the only gaming platform where we’ve seen these companies recently butt heads. Both companies also have large footprints in the online casino genre. Major platforms offer a number of Marvel slot favourites like The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man in an effort to further popularise their heroes. But DC is working diligently to increase its presence in this ever-growing market, too, by offering similar games based on Green Lantern, Batman, Superman, and more. These games are your standard casino offerings, but they have heroes, villains and other icons populating the slot reels. And they’re an excellent way to get these characters in front of people who might not necessarily be interested in the movies or books.

When Marvel and DC start to compete, it’s the fans who win. Competition drives each company to make bigger and better games with even more characters and options. Injustice 2 is already out for Xbox One and PS4, and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is set for a September 19 release. Whether you’re a Marvel admirer or a DC devotee, you’ll have plenty of options when it comes to battling your favourite characters against each other.
